Livery Companies of London

The order of precedence of the livery companies was decided by the Lord Mayor in 1515, following years of dispute between the companies.

Controversy over the sixth place gave rise to the saying "at sixes and sevens". The Merchant Taylors and the Skinners change places every year at Easter.

The first 12 Senior Companies are known as the Great Twelve.

The Mercers Company

The premier livery company in the City of London. It dates back to the 13th century when livery companies (or guilds) were formed as fraternities to safeguard the interests of their members concerned with a particular trade.
